Those who supported the most stringent Covid measures are now among the most ardent advocates of conflict with Russia and China. Coincidence, or two sides of the same coin?
"There is something to be said for government by a great aristocracy which has furnished leaders to the nation in peace and war for generations; even a democrat like myself must admit this. But there is absolutely nothing to be said for government by a plutocracy, for government by men very powerful in certain lines and gifted with the money touch, but with ideals which in their essence are merely those of so many glorified pawnbrokers."
What you say is all true, except that even IF our ruling class can see that "The West" is going to lose badly (some do, some don't), they have no motivation to "back away." Because they don't actually feel any allegiance to "the West." This is, I think, what the rest of us must grasp. Over the last 2-3 decades, they have come to think of themselves only as the divine "Global Elite," whose rule transcends borders.
To them, "saving face" is no incentive, since they are sure they will continue to live in luxury even if the war goes badly. Zelensky and his cronies are richer now than they could have imagined before the war. And to them, that's all that matters. At worst, they think to themselves, they'll just move to the Cote d'Azur.
I think that in this time the words have got other meaning and the word democracy mean autocracy and the world autocracy mean democracy.
I understand what you mean. Modern-day western 'democracy' is in fact an oligarchy.

It's brilliant! He was absolutely right!

Excellent comment. Thank you
Thank you for an excellent article, John! You shoot straight in the bullseye, reminding us the line 'save one life '. How hypocrisy it was!
