A personal letter to my readers
I'd like to explain one small change to my page, and tell a little about myself and my life experience.
Dear Reader,
I hope you’ve found my page informative and insightful. Please note that access to my articles remains free of charge, but I’ve installed the option for a paid subscription if one so wishes. I’ve done this because some very kind readers have offered donations as a sign of support. Thank you very much.
Substack might ask you to choose a type of subscription. If you can donate, I’d be grateful. If not, please don’t worry or feel uncomfortable; and just choose “None” under the payment plan. You will still have access to my articles. If there’s any problem with access, please contact me directly at: jdvaroli@gmail.com
I started this Substack page in September 2021 after being thrown off Medium, where I previously wrote my analysis and research reports. My ‘crime’? I wrote a satirical article mocking Pfizer and Big Pharma. That, of course, is a serious thought crime in America. Hence, I call this page: “A Vaccine Against the Pandemic of Lies”.
Indeed, we Americans, with the exception of free states such as Florida and Texas, live in a country overwhelmed by lies and falsifications that incessantly emanate from the ruling party and the media outlets under its de facto control. Standing for Truth is the most noble and patriotic act that an American can do today.
In fact, standing for Truth is the duty of every person who cares about the future of humanity. We are now at the most pivotal juncture in history, and we all must do something. Speaking Truth is the greatest weapon in our arsenal in this fight against evil, and this is why our dishonest and cowardly rulers try to censor us and shut us down. More than anything, they fear the light of truth, free speech and open debate.
For those of you who don’t know me personally and who are new to this page, here’s a little about myself:
I am a trained geopolitical analyst, but I have spent most of my professional life as a human rights activist, journalist, TV commentator and media consultant. I graduated Cornell University in 1990 with two degrees: in Soviet Studies and U.S. Foreign Policy.
My father spent his entire career working for the U.S. government, and we were stationed at the U.S. embassy in Brussels in the mid 1980s. Upon graduation, my goal was to go into the U.S. diplomatic service. But with the collapse of the USSR, my skills were no longer needed, and I decided to head East on my own and live three months in Russia as a private citizen. Things didn’t quite turn out as I had expected. Instead of three months, I stayed 20 years.
From 1992-1995, I worked in Moscow in human rights as founder and director of a small NGO helping refugees and the homeless. Every day for almost three years, I was on the front lines of the worst epidemic in Europe since 1918. In the 1990s, antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis ravaged the countries of the former USSR, and there was fear that it would spread globally, which of course never happened.
This experience gave me tremendous insights into the nature of infectious disease and the human immune system. Hence, today I speak out against Anthony Fauci’s Covid bioweapon and other crimes perpetrated against the human race since March 2020. Mother Nature has never created anything like Covid. Disease only flourishes where there is war, or poverty, or social upheaval or poor hygiene. Or if a pathogen ‘escapes’ or is deliberately unleashed from a lab.
Next, I spent June 1995 to June 1996 in Prague, where I worked as an analyst and journalist. My first two jobs were writing for Transitions Magazine, and Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty. In June 1996, I moved to St. Petersburg and soon began writing for the St. Petersburg Times. In late 1998, I landed a job with the New York Times as a features writer; at the same time, I worked as a features writer for Bloomberg News, and also wrote analytical articles for the Jamestown Foundation (Wash DC).
In late 2003, Bloomberg appointed me to its newly created position of art market correspondent for Russia and Ukraine. Since I thought that the era of geopolitical rivalry between the U.S. and Russia was over, it seemed that my skills were no longer needed. So, I eagerly embraced the challenge of analyzing and writing about Russia’s and Ukraine’s cultural scene and art market, which I did until summer 2010.
During that time, I was able to meet some of the most powerful oligarchs in both Russia and Ukraine, such as Petr Aven in Moscow and Viktor Pinchuk in Kiev. I learned a lot about the history and culture of both Russia and Ukraine, and I understood very well how these two neighbors are close siblings in the same Slavic family. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either a liar or ignorant.
Then, in 2006-2007, while writing about art for Bloomberg, I simultaneously worked as a TV news producer for Reuters in Moscow, covering major events. In summer 2010, I made the fateful decision to leave journalism entirely, (Bloomberg was my last place of employment).
From summer 2010 to late 2014, I ran a small PR company for both Russian, Ukrainian and European clients in the world of art and culture. In summer 2014, I returned to the U.S., a country that was very different from the one I had left in 1990.
I should also mention that from 2003 to 2013, I periodically worked as a media consultant for UNICEF and other United Nations agencies working in Russia and Azerbaijan; I was many times in the Caucasus region and saw the conflict there.
With the collapse of the Russian and Ukrainian art scene in late 2014, (a direct result of the start of the war in Donbass in spring 2014), I became a media consultant for tech startups from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus that had opened offices in New York.
Finally, in late 2019 and early 2020, I researched human rights abuses in Norway, Denmark and elsewhere in northern Europe; specifically how these NATO governments illegally abduct and traffic innocent children. (You will hear more about this in my next article).
What am I doing these days? In addition to this Substack page, I now study global energy trends and issues related to the so-called ‘energy transition’. And yes, I will be covering those topics on this page. In fact, I write a weekly column on global energy markets for Japan NRG Weekly.
Also, since 2016, I’ve been a frequent TV commentator on U.S. politics and global geopolitics for Russian, Ukrainian and some American TV channels. I wish to state clearly that all my TV appearances are voluntary and unpaid. I deliberately do that in order to remain impartial and avoid any accusations.
Since 2014 and until 2021, many of my PR clients were from Ukraine or Ukrainian-Americans. I rarely worked with Russia during that time. This is why my testimony about Ukraine is so powerful and such a threat to elites in Washington, London and Brussels. I truly believed in the future of Ukraine; a Ukraine that was independent and neutral, that was not a part of NATO, and where the ethnic Russians of the Donbass enjoyed freedom and protection from Ukrainian nationalists.
I told Ukrainian friends that the only way for their country to be successful and prosperous was to make peace with Moscow and for Ukraine to act as a ‘bridge’ between the West and Russia. This formula was so simple and so easy to implement. And it would have made Ukraine rich and successful.
As one of the few trained Americans who has worked extensively with both Russia and Ukraine for over 30 years, I’m in a unique position to comment on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which is now a Russian-NATO conflict. My articles draw on my extensive daily research, my extensive network of sources across Ukraine and Russia, and my many years visiting, living and working with both countries.
I hope that my page will truly be a ‘vaccine’ against the ‘pandemic of lies’. I hope that it will encourage you to think critically, independently and to pose difficult questions to those who rule over us, and who are misleading us down a very dangerous path.
Thanks for the excellent research and great articles, John! I have been regularly reading your publications and articles since March 2020 and have been convinced more than once of your insight and talent as an analyst. And now we see the consequences of the covid lockdown policy began to manifest itself in the fall of banks, which you warned about back in March 2020.
Great article. Thank you, John!
